Changes to the Website

Post by lac »

Right now if I try to print the nightmare page, I get a size where the
fonts and everything is much larger. This is good. But unfortunately
The SudoCue logo and links bar takes up a third of the page, leaving
the Sudoku truncated in the middle of column 7. Also, there are
no advertisements, and the links section ends at the TOP 50 Sudoku.

If I ask firefox to display the frame in its own window, I get the whole
sudoku. For some reason the fonts and all are a lot smaller. But you
still get the links side. And the advertising is back. Things fit
because the puzzle is smaller. If there was any way to
get the large size, but to get rid of the links sidebar, from my perspective,
that would be perfect.

Different change

Post by lac »

Your Nightmare links on http://www.sudocue.net/ are 'Daily Sudoku' and 'Sudoku Archive'. But there are lots of 'Daily Sudokus'. I think you
should name them 'Latest Nightmare' and 'Nightmare Archive'. If not
that, well, nightmares are at _night_ so this is your _Nightly Sudoku_

Seriously, I think that there is no need to include the word 'Sudoku'.

But it is all up to you, of course.

About getting the larger vs the smaller nightmares

Post by lac »

I reproduced it 5 times before I posted this, but now I cannot reproduce
it at all. Either you, like me, think that 0500 is a cool time to hack, or
my problem was related to something else, which has gone away now.

Busy night :-s

I like the idea, sort of build a theme around it. It notice these puzzles are more and more becoming subject of discussion on other forums, where they are simply referred to as "Nightmare".

I will chew on it for a while, and you will see...

The answer is yes, but not this night. It must have been something else. I know that my hosting provider is very busy moving domains to their new server at night.
If I ask firefox to display the frame in its own window, I get the whole
sudoku.
The frame is there because you and many others have a link to daily.htm. This page now contains a single frame with daily.php
When you navigate within the website using the links bar, you will see these pages breaking out of their frame. A decent ad-blocker must be able to get rid of anything you don't like.

When I changed these pages, I checked the print preview with a couple of browsers (IE, Maxthon, Opera, Firefox, NetCaptor) to make sure the puzzles can be printed in a decent format. For some browsers, the print is better if you use "landscape" format.

As I indicated earlier, I will (soon, promise  ) add a printer-friendly version.

I am very pleased to see how much people like these nightmares.

re: advertising

Post by lac »

They weren't popup ads I was talking about, but Google Sponsored
Add Links. Sorry to be unclear. At any rate, whatever caused them to
go away is not doing whatever it did right now.

Print the Nightmare

Post by lac »

While this could be considered Whinging, I prefer to present it as a request
for information. :P

Why does the printout I get be black and white and not share the
attractive beige shadings I associate with this site?

Laura not whinging, really

for our [edit: Not] Whinging Pom, I did some research:

A very unpopular browser, IE6, has an 'advanced' Internet Option to print pages with background images and colors. IE clones like Maxthon and NetCaptor use the same Internet Options.

Opera and Firefox do not have any printer-related options.

End of research report...

Next question? =;
