Sue de Coq, v 3.1.0.1

Ruud, Sudocue version 3.1.0.1 seems to detect most Sue de Coq patterns (it's found several which I've missed), but I've found a few which it doesn't. I've slowly began undertaking some of the so-called "Unsolvable" puzzles from sudoku.org.uk ( here ). This is the position in Unsolvable #12...

I guess the only remaining loose end for me regards your original mutant Jellyfish. It would appear that the base set (r2r3c2c5) for that pattern has houses with common candidates: r3, c2 and c5 share occupied cells (r3c2 and r3c5). Doesn’t that violate one of the defining rules for a fish? Yes, yo...

Sudtyro, I'm sorry, I can't really help with your questions. The thread I referenced was basically a "learn as you go" experience for me so I don't want to claim any expertise in this area. I certainly don't know of any rule or heuristic principle which might help us in determining when a ...

Version 3.0.0.3 -- No Sue de Coq Recognition?

I've not yet tried the latest Sudocue release (3.1.0.0). In version 3.0.0.3, there seems to be a problem with "Sue de Coq" pattern recognition. As an example, for the 5 May 2007 Nightmare, the Sudocue solver arrives at this position, in which it does not detect the classic Sue de Coq posit...

Re: Mutant Fish Eliminations

Really learning a lot on this thread... (6): r1c3 = r4c3 - r4c4 = r2c4 - r2c7 = r1c79 - r1c3 => AIC loop... So, isn't this "Fishy Cycle" also a Franken swordfish? Base: c3, c4, b3 Cover: r1, r2, r4 If so, it would appear to provide all six of the AIC loop's original eliminations without a...

Sushimi Fish

A general question: When there exists a single digit AIC loop (sometimes called a "fishy cycle", and I'm beginning to see why), is there always an associated fish structure, as in this puzzle? This was really an idle question, not all that important. I much prefer working with AIC loops (...

Re: Great help, thanks.

rep'nA, your method is the answer that I couldn't find but I do still wonder whether it would matter if r2c12 were "givens" rather than "solves"? zoltag, Let me have a try at your question. The answer is no. Once again, at the outset let me say that I think that sashimi swordfis...

Franken Fish

zoltag, For the grid that you show, I like Jean-Christophe's "closed loop" idea in his post. I would use "AIC loop" or maybe "AIC ring," but of course the name isn't particularly important as long as you understand the idea. I think AIC loops are much easier to spot tha...

Para, Very nice. Your AIC to eliminate (2)r9c9 is correct, and it's not really an easy one to start with. I agree that your argument to eliminate (8)r4c9 is more natural than the almost XYZ wing. An AIC which expresses your reasoning is (8=2)r6c8 - (2)r1c8 = (2)r1c9 - (2=78)r59c9 => r4c9 <> 8

Re: 1 June 2007 - "Almost" Swordfish

RM, I do have just one additional question. Does the "pattern + spoiler" technique guarantee that chains exist (beginning with the pattern and spoiler candidate) for all the proper eliminations? In other words, for this particular puzzle, the final solution shows in fact that r6c6 <> 6. S...

Sudtyro, Perhaps the way I presented things suggested that I determined a priori to consider only two of the possible swordfish eliminations and disregard the others. This was actually after the fact. It's just like any other AIC, such as for an XY chain. When you investigate a possible XY chain beg...

repn'A,

Your simpler alternative is a nice observation. Thanks for pointing it out.
