Many thanks, Ron, for the helpful feedback and suggestions. I had a feeling there were no “simple” answers to those two questions. Your reference to Obi-Wahn’s posts regarding finned fish is very interesting, and I plan to take a closer look at those threads. I also found your example of the ER patt...

Y-Wing

Mystery solved! Thanks for the link to udosuk's writeup. It's interesting...sometime back I ran across your post here and saved a hardcopy for my "wings" folder because it seemed like such a easy pattern to search for. It didn't seem to have a name, though, and I just couldn't imagine Y-no...

Hi Para,
Could you please clarify some nomenclature? I'm confused about exactly what a "y-wing" is. Sudopedia redirects to xy-wing, and Andrew Stuart's Sudoku Solver site says "aka xy-wing." But you refer separately to both.
TIA!

7/15/07 Nightmare...0 grams ALS

This exercise was undertaken to see if, in addition to the standard “basics” toolbox of solving methods, it might be possible to manually solve a difficult puzzle using only simple Alternating Inference Chains (AIC). And, just for the sake of argument, allowing no other solving techniques, such as p...

Thanks again...good explanation! I hadn't seen your threads in the other forum. In Ron's jargon, (3)r4c7 must be the "spoiler" digit in the "almost" pattern, and in this case is more like the fin in a finned fish because the spoiler can see the victim cell. I'm guessing the AIC (...

Re: 7/8/07 Nightmare...a nice multiple-methods example

The cells (5,5), (4,6), (4,7), (4,8) could be viewed as an almost xy-chain ... Thanks, rep'nA, for the feedback! I've learned just enough about "almost" structures from some of Ron Moore's postings to be almost dangerous :) , but I'm not sure about an almost xy-chain. Can you show how tha...

Fishing with Lines?

I have similar difficulties with most methods used to find fish patterns. However, not long ago I ran across Arcilla’s article in the other forum entitled, "a new (?) view of fish (naked or hidden)" http://www.sudoku.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=5017. His technique is easy to apply and seems...

Mutant Fish Eliminations

Really learning a lot on this thread... (6): r1c3 = r4c3 - r4c4 = r2c4 - r2c7 = r1c79 - r1c3 => AIC loop... So, isn't this "Fishy Cycle" also a Franken swordfish? Base: c3, c4, b3 Cover: r1, r2, r4 If so, it would appear to provide all six of the AIC loop's original eliminations without an...

Maybe I can change the printable versions to PDF format. I will look into this shortly. Actually, 98% of all forum postings will print just fine right out of a browser. The problem is only with that 2% that exhibits this pesky truncation problem on the right-hand side. Sure would be nice to know wh...

Thanks for relaying your experience with Firefox.

Very interesting and strange...I tried that site you mentioned (http://sudocue.net/cluelessguide.php), and it seems to not truncate when I view it on my Windows 2000 IE "Print Preview" option.

Not sure where to go from here.

Printer Page-Width Problem

Cannot seem to figure this one out: Certain posts, when examined using my Windows 2000 IE "Print Preview" option, show the pages truncated on the right-hand side (and they print that way, too). E.g., when I "Print Preview" enxio27's recent post on "Specials page", the p...

MJ,

One quick follow-up question on your "trick"...
Does “stand-alone” mean naked only, or can a successful cyclic path also indicate a possible hidden fish?
